PHC: Changes to Public Health Guidance in British Columbia

Hello HLI Members

Masks are now required to be worn in hospital areas. You do not need to wear a mask in HLI space which is not considered public or patient space.

This means you should be wearing a blue mask when in hospital hallways, elevators and patient areas.

We are restocking our blue mask inventory, N95’s and COVID test kits, so please be patient as we rebuild our inventory. Blue masks will also be available at entrances.

Thank you

Dear Providence,

Respiratory infections are increasing across British Columbia. On September 28, 2023, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced the beginning of the respiratory season and changes to provincial health policies. These changes will impact our organization, and we want to ensure that everyone is aware of the updated guidance.

Effective October 3, 2023, protective policies are being put in place in health care settings to protect patients, residents, tenants, and clients who may be more at risk of severe infections or complications.

Acute Care Settings:

  • Masks are required to be worn by staff, medical staff, volunteers, visitors and contractors in all patient care areas. This includes hallways, waiting rooms or lobbies which are accessible to patients or clients who are there to access care or services.
  • Exemption from continuous masking: areas that are not accessible to patients or clients.

Long-term Care or Assisted Living Settings:

  • Masks are required to be worn by visitors in all common areas.
  • Visitors are not required to wear a mask in a resident’s room.
  • Staff, volunteers and contractors are required to wear a mask in public areas.

We will be welcoming back ambassadors at facility entrances to ask about respiratory symptoms, give out masks, and advise to not visit if sick.

Vaccination requirements for health care workers will remain in place.

PHC’s Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) team is working on updating all relevant documents to reflect these changes. IPAC will distribute additional guidelines to leaders; signage and messaging for the organization will be updated to be in line with these policies by the end of this week.

More information about respiratory illness vaccines will be sent in the coming days.

Thank you for your cooperation and shared commitment to prioritizing the well-being of those under our care.
