We are pleased to announce that the James Hogg Research Centre has received UBC Vancouver Senate approval to be renamed as the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI).
Originally named in honour of its founding member, world-renowned pulmonary pathologist Dr. James Hogg, the Centre has been renamed to reflect its expanded mission to attract, support and connect world-class researchers in advancing pulmonary, cardiovascular and critical care medicine.
With a refreshed strategic plan also now in place, HLI is focussed on accelerating patient-centred therapeutic and biomarker solutions to not only improve the heart and lung health of British Columbians, but people across Canada and around the world.
We are also pleased to announce that Dr. Don Sin has been reappointed Director, HLI for a second five-year term effective to June 30, 2028.
Dr. Sin is a professor in the Department of Medicine and recognized as a leading expert in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Using ‘omics’ data to discover novel biomarkers of disease activity and new therapeutic targets, his research aims to reduce hospitalization and mortality in patients with COPD.
Dr. Sin holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and the De Lazzari Family Chair at JHRC. He has served on the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) scientific committee since 2009 and is the section editor for the European Respiratory Journal and an editorial board member of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. In his second term as Director, HLI, Dr. Sin will continue to lead a group of clinical and basic researchers committed to being world leaders in understanding and eliminating heart, lung and blood vessel diseases. In addition, Dr. Sin will work to ensure the activities of the Centre align with the Faculty of Medicine and Providence Health Care Research Institute’s Strategic Plans, while advancing the establishment of a cross-site heart and lung initiative.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Sin on his reappointment and thanking him for his continued leadership and commitment.
Sincerely,
