The overall Personal Security and Public Safety Program is overseen by the Department of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) at UBC. The purpose of the program is to provide all members at the University Community including faculty, staff and students with an environment safe from violence or the threat of violence.
The Centre for Heart Lung Innovation fully endorses the UBC Policy #SC13 (Response to At-Risk Behaviour) and the Personal Security and Public Safety Program.
HLI is committed to providing a safe and secure place for work and study to everyone at the HLI. The Centre has zero tolerance to any threats to personal safety or violence towards employees or students on the premises. Appropriate actions will be taken to eliminate or minimize the risk of threat of violence to faculty, staff, students and visitors according to the HSE Department requirements.
Working alone during regular hours
- Use good judgment and common sense. Be aware of surroundings.
- Secure all personal items and information.
- Know where to obtain assistance.
- If at any time you feel threatened you should call Code White (Aggression) “7111”.
Working alone outside regular hours
- Keep friends and family informed of your schedule to avoid worries. Use buddy system.
- Let someone (your supervisor or someone from the next door lab) know that you are planning to be working alone, so they can come and check up on you. Record hourly contact with someone.
- Let SPH Security know that you will be working late so they can check up on you at least once during every shift, radio phone 69164.
- When alone, try not to start any experiments. If you must to go ahead with the experiment, you must check the safe work procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment to protect yourself from unexpected. Check hourly with someone.
- If at any time you feel threatened you should call Code White (Aggression) “7111”.
Walking alone to car or home at night
- Let your family and friends know your home travel route and estimated arrival time.
- Call SPH Security (radio phone 69164) to escort you to the parking lot.
- Do not wear a walkman.
- Have your car key ready.
