Lead under the direction of Dr. Gordon Francis, the Healthy Heart Program Prevention Clinic, formerly the Lipid Clinic, is a hospital-based outpatient clinic for assessment and reduction of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The clinic was initially established in the 1980’s as a diagnosis and treatment centre for patients with inherited lipid disorders including genetically high cholesterol or triglycerides, or low HDL. The clinic still functions as the main provincial site for referral of patients with inherited lipid disorders, but is also a referral site for overall cardiovascular risk assessment and management and for patients with pre-diabetes, difficulty tolerating lipid-lowering medications, personal or family history of early heart attack or stroke, and for smoking cessation. The clinic is also a major UBC research and teaching centre. Referral from a family physician or specialist is required.
